While Romans, Vikings, Phoenicians and ancient Egyptians all perfected sailing techniques, navigation has taken a big leap forward in recent decades - especially the kind of competitive sailing taking place Wednesday off San Francisco's Crissy Field.

On a chilly, overcast day, scores of contestants rode sleek boards with high-tech masts and sails, vying for a prize that's coveted from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Anchorage, Alaska: windsurfing champion of America.

Forty years after it was created, windsurfing is an Olympic sport, with prestige, bragging rights and money to be had from an activity that requires stamina, strength, tactical smarts and patience. Windsurfers say maneuvering their boards for hours on end is more demanding than baseball, where professionals of years past were known to carry pot bellies...

third day of racing. nice 10 ho! conditions in a mild
ebb on san francisco bay. race started near the club,
to a mark below the gate for a windward mark, then to
a mark off the north tip of treasure island and then
back to the club to finish. conversations with the top
finishers including seth besse, eric christensen,
andreas macke, karen mariot, junior peter botha and
more. a few collisions occured on the race course
including one that drew blood and tore big chunks out
of formula boards. special cameo conversation with the
infamous 'larry' of crissy field who has a generous
offer to teach any women how to water start.

San Francisco served up some classic conditions with a stiff 25-30k breeze and plenty of voodoo chop for the last day of course racing at the US Windsurfing National Championships. For most of the racers there was no shame in using the chicken, double chicken and even super chicken straps to get downwind in one piece. The 9.0's finally came out and it was survival sailing for most of the fleet to get around the triple windward leeward course set in front of Crissy field and the StFYC.

With 10 races down, and a 1-2 finish on Saturday, I moved up from 9th to 2nd overall as the throwout came in and the scores were adjusted.
After having broke a mast on the first race on Day 1 of the event, I sailed conservatively in the top 5 every race as the rest of the fleet has their share of misfortunes and breakdowns all week. Seth Besse - event winner sailed a near perfect regatta with 9 bullets plus taking the top honors in the slalom discipline- run on Friday in 20-25 knots.

The event also served as the Formula North American Championship qualifying 5 racers for the Worlds later this year in Brazil.
