The real truth about Maui windsurfing conditions....
After the hurricane going by left a few days windless (light variables), today at lower Kanaha near the lifeguard tower, it blew so hard that big guys were rigging down from 5 and 6 meter sails to 4.2s and 4.7s. I'd guess it was 20 or 25 knots or stronger with larger gusts. The ladies had enough with 3.5s, 3.7s and the occasional 4.2. Now there weren't any waves to speak of, but for several days the south shore has had 4 to 6 foot (Hawaiian style measurement) which translates to 8 to 12 foot wave faces. Totally exciting. I met people from Germany, Chicago and New Zealand today. Bitchin'..... Come and get some of this. Hi-Tech and Kanaha Kai shops are less than a quarter of a mile away and give you a no-wind surfboard clause. Snorkle the south shore near Big Beach or get nekked at world famous Little Beach. If you need a guide email me.

The last 2 weeks have blown 4.0 and 3.5 for the ladies and 4.2s up to 5.3 for most guys. The wind shifted a bit north on some days so Kihei on the south shore had even more wind than up here and then back northeast with some side off easterly days. All in all, nobody complained for lack of sailing. Worn hands, stubbed toes and such brought a lot of smiles to visitors used to a light wind home break. A hui ho from Kanaha.

After many good sailing days in September we are experiencing one of the first wind draughts in awhile. The surfers are getting a swell every few days and loving the glassy conditions. Today Hookipa will possibly be overhead to double. Snorkeling has been good this week too.

The wind came back strong these last couple of days. Been out of the east a bit so Kanaha is slightly/side off shore. You have to pump/wait a bit to get out 100 yards and then it's blasting pretty strong. At 175 lbs I was on a 4.7. The waves went from logo high in some sets on Monday to head high or better in the sets on Tuesday. There were 10 jet ski rescues on Monday and my disconnected universal made me yesterdays only one. Wind tomorrow is supposed to increase and shift more northeast, the best direction.
