View Full Version : Set-up for My Situation?

I'm 54, and wanting to get back into windsurfing as I get into retirement. As a 40 year old I was into water starting and attempting the transition to jibbing when family and tennis kind of over-took sailing, and I sold my gear.

Also unique to my situation is I'm primarily interested in sailing on the little lake nearest to my house, notorious for swirling, not so strong winds. In the last 15 years has equipment improved to the point of making water starts easier in lower winds?

I don't anticipate traveling to high wind areas, but will probably just be into daily sailing sessions for exercise and nature benefits.

Any suggestions on new gear for my situation?

Thanks

Good for you for getting back into it, first of all. As for your gear question; Yes, it's gotten a lot easier to waterstart, because everything is much lighter, be sure you buy as much carbon fiber as your wallet can stand. The bad news is if you're sailing in light winds you're going to need some big gear, which is more difficult to waterstart simply due to it's size. If you're talking about very light winds, say 10-14, you'll want some formula gear. You'll be able to toodle around planing in 10 knots, and when you do have to schlog it's much easier on the arms. You should be able to get a full set-up used for around $1200.
